English as an Additional Language
Our division is rich with diverse communities and languages. We welcome a growing number of newcomers each year and many Canadian families speak a language other than English at home. We strive to respond to the different needs and circumstances of each student, regardless of English language proficiency, school experiences and family background.
Our students receive:
- individualized assessments of each student's language and learning needs
- appropriate instruction geared to individual needs
- a safe and encouraging learning environment
Our schools respond to the learning needs of students whose first language is not English through programming which supports success in school by developing:
- vocabulary
- language skills
- intercultural understanding
- learning strategies
Sunrise supports the development of teaching capacity throughout the division by providing consulting services, programming guidance and professional development to school and divisional staff.
