ÉESS and SCI Special Olympics

The teams were thrilled to travel to the university to engage in sport and interact with peers from across the province. The RecPlex is an amazing facility and the whole field trip experience made for an exhilarating, but exhausting, day!

Pictured is Ecole Edward Schreyer School’s Unified Team which pairs students without an intellectual disability, with students who have an intellectual disability. The Barons team was full of smiles and incorporated huge amounts of singing, dancing and cheering into their day.

Springfield Collegiate Institute teamed with Springs Christian Academy, exhibiting great sportsmanship, collaboration, and kindness. All the students enjoyed themselves thoroughly and were a testament to their school.

With additional scheduled events upcoming in the new year, teams continue to practice the fundamentals and a variety of sports at school on an ongoing basis. Special Olympics Manitoba specifically supports soccer, basketball, bocce ball and track & field. Aside from being a ton of FUN!!! -  physical fitness, mental health, communication and social skills are just some of the areas that are targeted.

In the spring of 2023, Sunrise School Division, with support from Special Olympics Manitoba, will be hosting a “Come Try Special Olympics” event at Ecole Edward Schreyer School for any interested athletes in the division. Watch for it as this will certainly be a fun and exciting event for all! Thank you to all of the coaches, volunteers and supporters of the Special Olympics initiative.
