January 2009
Welcome back to ESS for 2009!! We trust that everybody had a well-deserved break from the hard work at school and took some time to relax and recharge over the holiday. This also means that we are all coming back with some renewed energy and are ready to tackle the end of semester one and to face the first set of exams for the year. Middle Years students do not write exams. Grades 9 to 12 students must write all exams scheduled in the first semester. Grade 12 students need to be ready for the Provincial exams that fall outside of the school’s exam week. There are no exemptions from exams; however, some courses do not have a final exam being written. Please check the schedule in this newsletter carefully for the dates and times of each exam being written. Students and parents are reminded to check with their teacher for any outstanding assignments before the end of the first term. The last day of classes for Senior Years students is Monday, January 26th.
January may also bring some cold temperatures so please remember to check the division website at www.sunrisesd.ca for any school closures before sending your child off to catch the bus or to walk to school. Announcements will be made on CJOB and the school telephone line will also have a message indicating a school closure if the weather is too severe for school to be open. If a school closure should occur during exam week, the exam schedule will shift forward and not skip any days. The school answering machine will also list the exams being written on the next day in the event of a school closure during the exam week.

A huge thank you goes out to all the staff, students and parents for continued generosity with their efforts gathering non-perishable food items and gifts for the school’s Christmas Hampers. This year the school helped to supply eleven hampers for families in our community. Our sincere hope is that they brought joy to the people who both gave and received this past holiday season.

H.O.P.E. NEWS IS A PUBLICATION FROM NETWORK 4 CHANGE AND IS FULL OF COMMUNITY RESOURCES AND INFO.
PICK ONE UP AT THE ESS OFFICE !!!
The school would like to remind all parents and community members that all doors to the school are locked between 9:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. except for the front door to the school. We ask that all visitors sign in at the office and pick up a visitor’s badge so that all staff and students know that you have permission to be in the building during the school day.
On Thursday, December 18th the Senior Student Council and the ESS Human Rights Group worked together to put on what some described as the “best pancake breakfast ever”. Students and staff lined up to pay a $1.00 or a tin for the bin to enjoy delicious pancakes, fresh fruit and hot chocolate. Highlights of the event included pictures with Mr. and Mrs. Claus as well as voting for the best tree in the Charlie Brown Christmas tree contest.
Congratulations to the winners:
1st – Cancer Care Tree
(submitted by the Varsity Cheer Team)
2nd – ‘Histree’
(submitted by Mrs. Spence’s
Grade 11 History class)
3rd – Grade 9 Content Literacy
(submitted by Ms. Kaptein’s class)
Ten trees were entered in the contest and winners were determined by votes cast during the pancake breakfast. A good time was had by all who attended this event with $150 dollars and several boxes full of canned goods raised for the local food bank.
A HUGE WELCOME GOES OUT TO…
Mrs. Eunice Laval
who will be joining the ESS team as one of our Guidance Counsellors starting on January 5th.
The school is looking forward to having you as part of our staff. Welcome!!
Varsity Cheer Squad News…
Congratulations to the ESS Varsity Cheer Squad who ranked number one in their first competition of the year. The crowd at the Investors’ Group Centre at the University of Manitoba roared when the team performed some of Michael Jackson’s dance moves during the Thriller portion of their routine. Great work Carley Jordan for choreographing this part of the dance!
The squad will be working hard over the next few months to improve their routine with bigger stunts and smoother transitions for upcoming competitions held in January and also in March.
The team is currently raising money for Cheer for the Cure – a fundraiser in support of breast cancer research through Cancer Care Manitoba. You can help by making a donation to help fight a disease that will affect 1 in 9 women in their lives. The ESS squad thought this was the perfect charity to support as the team is made up of more than 30 girls.
ESS PARENT COUNCIL MEETING

This is Daniel’s first year in Tae Kwon Do and he is to be commended on his hard work and dedication to his sport. Way to go Daniel !!
An important reminder to all Middle Years students that they will be going outdoors for recesses and lunch throughout the winter except in cases of extreme temperature.
Please bring appropriate winter clothing to avoid being “too cool”.
During the month of December,
Kayla Schwark and Melissa Popiel
left jars at businesses throughout the community to raise money for the
Ladybug Foundation.
The girls managed to collect
$171.36 to support this worthy cause.
It is a good time of year to consider internet safety for your children as they may have received computer items over the holidays, or they may just find themselves indoors more with the cold weather. Consider the following when you are online:
ü Don’t post pictures of yourself as they might be used by someone else without your knowledge.
ü Don’t put a webcam in an area that gives away personal information about you or your family.
ü Be aware of who your children are talking to online.
ü Always keep your passwords private.
ü Report anything that makes you feel suspicious or uncomfortable.
ü Ensure that security precautions are taken on social networking sites to limit outside access to personal pages.
For more information about web safety, visit any of the sites listed below:

Remember that it is very difficult to know if an online friend is telling the truth, or even to be certain of the identity of an online friend.
