Grade 8 Course Outlines

Language Arts
This course includes a variety of learning experiences including novels, writing, spelling, grammar, media, poetry, and creative writing.

Mathematics
The strands covered include number connections, rational numbers, ratios, percents, patterns and relations, solving equations, measurement, surface area and volume, geometry and statistics, and probability.

Science
Interesting experiments and demonstrations are included in this course as students learn about Cells, Fluids, Light, and Water Systems.

Social Studies
The grade 8 course is a World History course that covers Very Early Times, Ancient Civilizations, and Early Modern Europe.

Computers
This course incorporates keyboarding, word processing, and research skills.

Basic French
Grade 8 Basic French follows a communicative experiential format. Students enhance their grammar and vocabulary skills through oral, listening, and written exercises.

Art
Students will be exposed to a variety of techniques throughout the year including:

Drawing: line, contour, modeling and illusion of space

Painting: value, colour, warm/cool colours

Sculpture: subtractive, modeling, linear sculpture

Ceramics: clay

Printmaking: relief

Grade 8 Woods:
This is a continuation of grade seven. Emphasis will be placed on the use of woodworking machines and an introduction to design and computer aided drafting.

Music 8
Students have the opportunity to continue learning music in an instrumental capacity.  In this third year of instruction, students explore orchestral music, moving more repidly through repertoire and performing several times throughout the school year.  Regular home practice is an expectation and counts for 15% of the final mark.
