Grade 7 Course Outlines

Math
The four stands of Mathematics (number, patterns and relations, shape and space, and statistics and probability) will be covered throughout the year with the following units:

Number Connections, Fractions, Decimals, and Integers, Number Operations, Operations with Integers, Percent, Ratio and Rate, Patterns, Variables and Equations, Chance and Uncertainty.

Science
Throughout the course, students will study the following units: Interactions Within Ecosystems, Pure Substances and Mixtures, Thermal Energy and Heat Technology, Earth’s Crust, and Structural Strength and Stability.

Social Studies
Throughout the course, students will study the following units: Reviewing Map and Globe Skills, Global Land and Water Forms, A World of Climates, Resources of the Earth, Ecosystems, People and Places, Using the Land, The Changing City, Linkages, Boundaries, North America, Latin America, Europe, and Asia.

Language Arts
Students will develop the LA modes (reading, writing, listening, speaking, viewing, representing) and meet curriculum objectives through the following learning activities and units: Spelling, Reader’s Response Journals, Grammar, Novel Studies, Book Reports, and Creative Writing.

Health
Students will study the following units: Social-Emotional Well-Being, Physical Well-Being, Nutrition, Dental Health, Safety, and Community Health.

Drama
Throughout this course, students will develop and improve their confidence, dramatic presentation skills, and public speaking skills. Students will be involved in various drama warm-up activities, improvisation scenarios, and public speaking activities throughout the first two terms. The third and fourth terms will focus on creating, developing, and presenting their own dramatic works as well as the work of others.

Basic French
Basic French follows a communicative experiential format. Students enhance their written and vocabulary skills through oral, listening and written exercises.

Art
Students will explore the elements of art, with hands on experience, using a variety of media for print making, drawing, painting, sculpting, ceramic and fibre art.

Woods
This course is a hands on, introduction to woodworking. Students will learn to use a variety of woodworking machines.

Music 7
Students have the opportunity to continue learning music in an instrumental capacity.  In this second year of instruction, students begin to explore orchestral music for the first time as a full orchestra.  Choice of instruments broaden as some students may move to larger instruments such as tuba, string bass, etc. at the discretion of the teacher.  Regular home practice is an expectation and counts for 15% of the final mark.  The grade 7 orchestra hosts 3-4 concerts per year.
