February 2010

News from the office…

We now have January behind us and are looking forward to the half way mark of the 2009-10 school year. Senior Years students are writing exams this first week of February and then will start second semester on Monday, February 8th. New copies of student timetables will be handed out during a homeroom period on the first day back. Course changes will only happen if students bring in a note from a parent indicating the change that needs to occur. Grade 12 students must make changes with Mr. Ewasko, Grade 11 students must make changes with Ms. Tymko, and Grade 9 & 10 students must make any changes with Ms. Fetterly. All course changes must be complete by Friday, February 12th.

February may still bring some cold temperatures so please remember to check the division website at www.sunrisesd.ca for any school closures before sending your child off to catch the bus or to walk to school. Announcements will be made on CJOB and the school telephone line will also have a message indicating a school closure if the weather is too severe for school to be open. If a school closure should occur during exam week, the exam schedule will shift forward and not skip any days. The school answering machine will also list the exams being written on the next day in the event of a school closure during the exam week.

Lastly, I want to highlight proudly the efforts of all students, staff and community members with their fundraising campaigns for helping Haiti in the aftermath of a detrimental earthquake. Seeing the organizational skills and the heartfelt participation makes me even happier to come to work at this school every day. It is truly awesome to witness the young adults and the staff stepping up and working together to help those in need. I am wholeheartedly proud of each one of you.

We have various activities planned for the month such as a Geography Challenge, where students can test their own geographical skills from grades 6-10, a Cocoa Cafe, where students will get to share their writing with their peers while sipping on hot chocolate. Also, during the month we will have DEAR in which the whole school will drop everything and read. All staff and students will have a chance to win, if they are caught reading, answering the one minute mysteries, as well as participating in the read to win contest with their class.

Literacy skills are important, therefore the Literacy committee challenges everyone to find a good book and read!

Free The Children’s We Generation…

A big thank you to SANDY POWERS of INVESTOR’S GROUP who nominated Edward Schreyer School to receive a fully sponsored speaking engagement with Free The Children’s We Generation speaking tour! On December 8th Keith Macpherson & Renee Lamoureux put on an exciting workshop at École Edward Schreyer School!    Keith, a former Canadian Idol contestant, along with Renee spread their message of compassion and caring through speaking and playing music. Free The Children and Investors Group are excited to launch this exciting initiative, which has a track record of success inspiring young people across Canada to work towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals.  Thanks to the ongoing support of Investors Group, thousands of youth nationwide will be motivated and empowered to become agents of change within their community and around the world. Founded in 1995 by international child rights activist Craig Kielburger, Free The Children is the world's largest network of children helping children through education, with more than one million youth involved in our innovative education and development programs in 45 countries. Keith and Renee had been touring since 2001, when they released their debut album. They have visited countless cities across North America and have played in international showcases in London and Paris. Their music had been played on television commercials, television shows, and their song Good Year off the Revolution album was chosen as Manitoba’s Homecoming 2010 official anthem song alongside Bachman Turner Overdrive’s ‘You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet’. They have appeared on local TV stations, as well as Canada AM. Their speeches, like their songs, convey a positive message without preaching. They are wonderful role models, and as Keith puts it “When one person decides to live their life in a positive way, it affects the people around them and becomes contagious.”

Thank you to Oliver Lavictoire

Christian Strecker, Sydney Compton, Carleen Stefaniuk, and Hope Dancho who represented ÉESS at a Middle Years Leadership Conference in Gimli last week.

Keep your eyes and ears open for the group’s first few projects coming soon.

Forum For Young Canadians…

Congratulations goes out to Trevor Ans

for being selected as a participant in this year’s Forum for Young Canadians.

Trevor will be representing École Edward Schreyer School, as well as the Sunrise School Division from April 18th to 24th at this conference being held in Ottawa, Ontario.

The forum looks at the foundation for the study of processes of government in Canada. Trevor will be joining other young Canadians to learn about the inner workings of our government at our nation’s capital. The school is proud that you were chosen for this all expense paid opportunity.

Way To Go Trevor!!

Course Selections for 2010-11…

It is that time again, when the school administration needs to start planning and timetabling for courses for next year.

Informational booklets will be handed out to students starting on February 16th

Each student will also participate in a presentation by grade or by homeroom before Friday, March 5th. Parents may attend an info night on Thursday, February 25th at 7:00 p.m. which will deal mainly with the transition from Grade 8 to the Senior Years credit and semester system.

The people to contact if you have any questions are listed in the front of the course selection booklet. Deadlines for returning forms are solid as we will offer courses based on student choices. Any issues with regards to space in a particular course will be solved in part by the date that the student’s form is returned.

Registration packages will be given out on Monday, March 8th. The final deadline for returning course selection forms is Thursday, March 18th. Please take the time to go over these important decisions with your child.

All Middle Years students will be

attending a Pre-Olympic Hockey Game

on Thursday, February 11th

at the MTS Centre in Winnipeg.

Hearts For Haiti…

As outlined in the News From The Office section, the students, staff, and community have truly stepped up and responded to the need for funds to help the earthquake shaken country of Haiti.

Some highlights of our efforts include:

·          Lauren Litke obtaining 172

I ? Haiti T-shirts which were sold for $20 per T-shirt. She also created a video for all students showing facts and photos from Haiti.

·          Brett Hanson, Ryan Wilgosh and

Kody Kennedy organizing a school-wide Hike For Haiti. Students and community members were invited to a free Pancake Breakfast following the event.

·          Mrs. Paseska’s class organizing a pledge drive to raise money through World Vision. Monies raised will be doubled by this organization.

·          Paper Hearts were sold by various students throughout the week for a cost of $2 per heart. The hearts were signed and displayed in the front hall.

·          Heart cookies were sold throughout the week for $2 per cookie. Various students with the help of Mrs. Blocker baked and decorated the cookies.

The initial tallies of the funds raised for Haiti are around the $6200 mark, with monies from the businesses in the community to be collected and counted on February 1st.

Look for final amounts and many more thanks in the March newsletter and the local papers.

Rachel’s Challenge – Year 2…

Rachel Scott was the first person killed in the Columbine High School tragedy on April 20, 1999. She left behind an amazing legacy and a simple challenge to anyone who will accept it – treat others with kindness and compassion and you may just change the world you live in.

Come join us on March 11, 2010 as we enjoy another presentation of Rachel’s Challenge at the Brokenhead River Recreational Complex. There will be two presentations during the school day and an evening presentation at 7:00 p.m. for anyone interested in attending.

News from the office?

Welcome back to ?ESS for 2010!! We trust that everybody had a well-deserved break from the hard work at school and took some time to relax and recharge over the holiday. This also means that we are all coming back with some renewed energy and are ready to tackle the end of semester one and to face the first set of exams for the year. Middle Years students do not write exams. Grades 9 to 12 students must write all exams scheduled in the first semester. Grade 12 students need to be ready for the Provincial exams that fall outside of the school?s exam week. There are no exemptions from exams; however, some courses do not have a final exam being written. Please check the schedule in this newsletter carefully for the dates and times of each exam being written. Students and parents are reminded to check with their teacher for any outstanding assignments before the end of the first term. The last day of classes for Senior Years students is Friday, January 29th.

January may also bring some cold temperatures so please remember to check the division website at www.sunrisesd.ca for any school closures before sending your child off to catch the bus or to walk to school.

 Holiday Hampers?

A huge thank you goes out to all the staff, students and parents for continued generosity with their efforts gathering non-perishable food items and gifts for the school?s Christmas Hampers. This year the school helped to supply six hampers for families in our community. The school and community were also very generous supporting Koats for Kids, a North End Women?s Shelter as well as the locked out Tembec workers in Pine Falls. Our sincere hope is that all these efforts brought joy to the people who both gave and received this past holiday season.

Chamber of Commerce

Student Rep Opportunity?

In association with the Beausejour Chamber of Commerce, a proposal was introduced to have two students in grades 11 or 12 become members at large of the organization.

The selected students would represent youth of tomorrow in observations, discussions and input for the betterment of our community from the perspective of youth.

Students would be required to attend regular scheduled Chamber of Commerce meetings.

Meetings scheduled during the school day would not be counted as an absence from regular class time. Students would need to be prepared to give input on attractions to our area, governmental issues of our community, wants and needs of youth, as well as current and future planning for our community.

The successful candidates will become active members with the Chamber of Commerce in September 2010 through to June 2011.

Grade 11 students chosen could continue in this role for the grade 12 school year as well. Students could earn a Volunteer Credit for being a member at large, in meeting the objectives, and for the time involved in this initiative.

Any interested students should see

Mr. Bauschke before the end of January to

put their name forward for this opportunity.

An important reminder to all Middle Years students that they will be going outdoors for recesses and lunch throughout the winter except in cases of extreme temperature.

Please bring appropriate winter clothing to avoid being ?too cool?.

News from the office?

With December arriving, we will be seeing a flurry of activity at the school, and we hope that it?s not in the form of too much snow. The student councils are actively planning some holiday activities, the community has it?s hamper program well under way, and the classrooms are filled with teachers and students getting projects, papers, and presentations wrapped up before the holidays begin. Two important reminders come to mind as we wrap up the first part of the school year. The first is to be thoughtful and considerate towards people with food allergies if we are bringing edible treats to school. The second is to remember that a kind word, or a caring gesture can very often be as valuable, if not more valuable than, an expensive gift.

Let?s spend the next three weeks putting our respectful actions into practice.

December has also arrived with above normal temperatures, for which we are thankful. However, we need to be prepared for the possibility of colder temperatures and/or hazardous winter road conditions. Please check the division website at www.sunrisesd.ca for any school closures before sending your child off to catch the bus or walk to school. Parents always have the right to keep their child at home if they feel that the weather or road conditions may be too dangerous for travel. Announcements regarding school closure will be made on CJOB and the school telephone line will also have a message indicating a school closure if the weather is too severe for school to be open. Check in any of these places for correct information.
Lastly, a heartfelt thank you to all staff, students, parents, and community members who have made this year a very great one thus far. We truly appreciate all the efforts by everyone to make ESS a wonderful place to be. Enjoy your holidays with those near and dear to you.

Pet Rescue Profits?

We are pleased to report that we have raised $687.77 for the Pet Rescue No Kill Shelter

in Winnipeg. Thank you to all the helpers, bakers, buyers and donators. Our highest donation was for $40.00, so Mme. Ramsay matched this amount with a $40.00 donation of her own. Thank you to everyone for your support of this fundraiser !!

Pancake Breakfast?

A Pancake Breakfast  for SY students will be held on Friday, December 18th. The cost will be a tin for the bin or a $1.00 donation to the Christmas Cheer Board or local food bank.

All students and staff who come to the Pancake breakfast will have the opportunity to vote on a winner for the Charlie Brown Christmas Tree Contest by placing a ticket in a gift wrapped voting box located under each participating group?s tree.

During the pancake breakfast you will also be able to have your picture taken with Santa ? at a cost of $1.00. All proceeds to be donated to the Christmas Cheer Board or local food bank.

CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS TREE CONTEST?

A Charlie Brown Christmas Tree is a small, straggly, ugly tree that just needs a little attention.

We would like to encourage individuals or groups of friends to sign up to do this? However we would also encourage teams or groups to sign up and decorate their tree to highlight their group. For example, the Varsity volleyball team might use volleyball ornaments with pictures of the team on each ornament. The Human Rights group might highlight an issue such as poverty. The Envirothon team might use pieces of garbage as decorations to highlight issues surrounding municipal landfill.

A science class might use test tubes and beakers as decorations.

To take part: Groups or individuals can pick up a sign up sheet from the bulletin board at the top of the stairs and submit the form to Mrs. Spence or Ms. Kaptein no later than

Wednesday, December 9th

Groups will be able to pick up their tree as early as Friday, December 11th or may choose to decorate it at lunch hour and leave it at school. The decorated trees must be completed by Thursday, December 17th and will be displayed in the auditorium until the end of the week. Judging will occur on Friday, December 18th.

Musical Notes?

?         December 10th is the annual Winter Concert for all ESS music students at the BRRC. It is important that all students attend as they play an important part in each ensemble. The Senior Orchestra will also be having its annual bake sale. Senior Orchestra students are reminded to bring their baking to the hall the morning of the concert.

?         The Senior Orchestra will be putting on a Christmas Sing-A-Long for the Association for Community Living on December 15th in the school auditorium at 2:30 p.m.

Middle Years PE Marks?

The middle years PE mark will look different than parents and students are accustomed to.  Instead of seeing a percentage mark, you will find only a comment.  The comment will reflect whether the student has met the learning outcomes for the term or not.  If you have specific questions regarding your child's performance please do not hesitate to contact any of the PE staff; Mr. Algera, Mr. Dueck or Mr. McKenty.

Women?s Shelter Donations?

?cole Edward Schreyer School is asking for YOUR help!  We are organizing a fundraiser for The North End Women?s Centre. They are having a Christmas party for those in need and donations will be handed out as presents.

We are asking for gently used:

?       Toys

?       Clothes (women & children)

?       Linens and pillows

?       Children?s pajamas

?       Craft supplies

Items will be picked up December 15 from the school. Any donations are greatly appreciated.

Organizers of this event are Jenessa Crognali, Heather Wade, Chelsey Flett, Stevie Goller, and Sarah Ehinger, who are all Grade 11 & 12 students from World Issues class.

 Talent Development?

From November 23 to 26, Cara Otto and McKennah Buss travelled to Camp Cedarwood to develop their artistic talents. The topic was ?Explorations in Space?, where they worked on storytelling, improvisation, movement, writing, and visual art projects.

Thank you to all the students who took part in the Royal Canadian Legion literary and poster contests.  There was some excellent work turned in.  Results and awards will be given out at our award ceremonies later this year.

Kailyn Greenlay and Angelika Damert represented ESS at the Provincial Youth Citizenship Conference in Winnipeg on November 20.  The day had the duo working with other students from around Manitoba to discuss global issues and create programs to create positive change.  Thank you for representing ESS in such a positive manner.

Thank you to Mrs. Kaptein for organizing the ?Artist in the School? program that took place November 23 to27.  Approximately 100 students had the opportunity to work with a screen writer for an hour each day for a week.  The students got to ?let loose? as they wrote and performed skits; learned about body movements; and acted like various people, object, and animals.   Their creativity and lightheartedness was a pleasure to see; their laughter infectious.

The Winnipeg Steel Orchestra visited ESS on November 24.  ESS student Alex Zueff worked with the instructors to lead a workshop and play songs for many of the middle years classes.  The band has provided Winnipeg with musical and cultural entertainment since 1972.  We are hoping to get them back next year on a grander scale.

STA president Randy Cielen has visited ESS and worked with each of our middle years classes for an hour.  He is an educator with a passion for children and science.  During the last week of October, he presented fun and excited science experiments.  He has started a Science Club that will be taking place every second Friday for students interested in science.  A big THANK YOU to Randy!

 Grade 12 World Issues Class

Tackles Poverty?

Mrs. Spence?s Grade 12 World Issues class recently visited the Siloam Mission in Winnipeg for a tour of the homeless shelter and to volunteer their time for a few hours to help those who are less fortunate. Students helped sort clothes, serve food, and clean tables at the mission which currently provides a clean safe place to sleep for up to 110 people a night.

As part of their unit on poverty students are now taking an active role to help stop poverty in their community. Projects include organizing a clothing drive for a shelter for abused women, developing a plan for a food cooperative, documenting poverty in a video production and volunteering their time at the local food bank. As Christmas quickly approaches we are reminded that it is better to give than receive.

2009 Holiday Train Stop?

On Saturday, December 5, 2009, the CPR Holiday Train will once again be stopping in Whitemouth at approximately 7:45 p.m. in support of the Canadian hunger relief.

In its eleventh year, the CPR Holiday Train will be sure to thrill the crowd with its many lights, talented musicians, and festive atmosphere of sharing and giving. Musical entertainment aboard this year?s train includes returning Canadian Blues Rocker, Shaun Verrault of Wide Mouth Mason. Also bringing their energy and full voiced harmonies to the Holiday Train stage for the first time is the alternative rock band, the Odds. Over the past six years, the train?s stop in Whitemouth has resulted in the collection of approximately 8480 pounds of non-perishable food items and donations totaling $10 168.25.

The Whitemouth and District Lions Club is asking you to please bring a cash donation or a non-perishable food donation to this event. Items collected will be distributed to local area food banks. This is an exciting event for our region!   Dress warmly, bring your whole family, support hunger relief and enjoy the show!!

News from the office?

Welcome to the month of November. It?s hard to believe that we are closing in on the middle of first semester and that report cards are going home on the 12th for all Senior Years students. Middle Years students will not receive the first of their three report cards until December 3rd

Having said that, all students should have received a progress report from each of their teachers indicating the strengths and weaknesses shown so far this year. These progress reports should have been signed and returned to school. Please contact your child?s teacher if you have not seen their progress report.

Also, please remember that report card time isn?t the only time when home and school should be communicating. If you feel that you need information about your child?s progress more frequently, please do not hesitate to call the school and leave a message for your child?s teacher to get in touch with you. The majority of our staff will see in excess of a hundred students each day, so it is easier for them to return a call than it might be for them to initiate one hundred. All students also received an agenda book at the beginning of the year. Parents should be using this tool to keep in contact with your child?s teacher on a regular basis.

Lastly, all staff members have regular access to e-mail during the day and can be reached by using their first initial and their last name @sunrisesd.ca. Some staff members have even set up class groups so that you get a regular update. Please contact your child?s teachers to make arrangements for electronic communication. Please contact the office to arrange a parent/teacher conference on Thursday, November 19th between the hours of 6:00 and 8:00 p.m. These conferences are for all students even though the Middle Years did not receive report cards yet. See you then.

Canadian Parents for French?

Why Take French?

I have been in the French Immersion program since Kindergarten.  It has been a very interesting experience.  There have been some ups and downs, but that is part of the experience.  If I had not had these 13 years of French language, my life would have been much different.  French is awesome!

It has been difficult to learn French, but I was fortunate to have a Dad fluent in French, he studied in Quebec.  My Dad would speak to me at home in French.  When I started in school, it was familiar, not foreign.

The benefit of better employment opportunities is huge!  Having a diploma in French, on your resume really stands out to the employer. Having a second language provides the ability to work anywhere in Canada.  There are many employment opportunities in government, in travel, in communication that require the second language of French.

I have benefited by being able to travel abroad and speak French, interacting in France, conversing with regular citizens.  Knowing another language solves and avoids many problems.  I have enjoyed my years in the Immersion program.  My ambition is to expand my knowledge by attending a French language university.

French has changed my life, and I recommend all parents to consider placing their children in the French Immersion program available in our area.  Merci.

News from the office?

October is here as we say goodbye to a hugely successful September. Students have started off the year being extremely helpful, caring and responsible. We have many students volunteering with school groups, playing on school teams and working hard on their studies in the classrooms of ESS. Several students are also out and about in the community either working, participating in recreation activities or giving of their own time.  Whatever the activity, I am always pleased and proud to hear about how well students from our school present themselves.

Thanks also go to our dedicated staff that are making their mark in many ways. Four staff have taken on the role of Teacher Designate which means they fill in for myself, Ms. Fetterly or Mr. Liske when we are away. Mr. Bonneteau, Mr. Ewasko, Mr. Kuleza and Ms. Shume work together with us to ensure that the daily routines remain consistent in our absence. Three other staff are leading the school as Educational Team Leaders. Ms. Kaptein leads the Outcomes Based Learning group, while Mrs. Blocker heads up the Numeracy team, leaving Mr. Ewasko in charge of the school?s AAAA (Academic, Arts, Aboriginal and Athletic) team. Stay tuned in the future months for even more info about the staff that run various programs and activities at the school.

Last, but certainly not least, our parent community is continuing on with its support of the school through an active Parent Council. The first meeting took place in September where a group of returning parents and some new faces reviewed the challenges on the table and set some direction for the upcoming year. A huge thank you goes to this group for the tables and benches installed outside last year.  Come out on Wednesday, October 14th at 7:00 p.m. if you are interested in being a member for the 2009-10 school year.

2009 EASTERN MANITOBA CAREER SYMPOSIUM?

The 2009 Eastern Manitoba Career Symposium is being held on October 21, 2009 at the Brokenhead River Recreational Complex in Beausejour. This is the only event of its kind in Eastern Manitoba. It?s more than a career fair. It?s a very comprehensive symposium hosting over 50 industries, employers, post-secondary educational institutions, and trade associations. More information about the Career Symposium can be found at www.eastmancareers.com. Career development doesn?t just happen in the classroom. Research shows that parents have the most influence on their children?s decisions about career choices and post-secondary education. That is why we strongly encourage parental involvement.

We cordially invite you to attend the 2009 Eastern Manitoba Career Symposium. Hours have been set to make it convenient for parents either during the day from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. or in the evening from 5:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. We look forward to your participation in this important event that will help your child learn and make informed decisions about their future career opportunities and post-secondary educational options.

News from the office…

I would like to take an opportunity to say thank you to the staff, students, parents and community members who have embraced the message given through the Rachel’s Challenge presentations this past February. Various people have received kind words, have been the recipient of caring actions or have enjoyed a positive message given or posted throughout the school. I hope you enjoy some of the student accomplishments listed in this newsletter and look forward to the increasing number of times that I receive this information about the people that I encounter daily here at school. Thanks and well done folks.

The school is also hard at work completing plans for next year. These plans include class placements, timetables, school goals and student transitioning. The deadline for classroom placement requests by parents has now passed. We appreciate the time and effort put into those requests received and will consider the best needs of all students when making decisions in the next two months. Classroom placements for Middle Years students will be included in the June report card. Timetables for Senior Years students will also be included in the June report card. The school will make every effort to make timetables available to students as early as possible so that any course changes can occur before the end of the year.

If this should not happen, students and parents are reminded that course changes must take place in the first six days of the school cycle when we return in September.

Lastly, teachers and parents need to work together during these last two months of school to help the students keep on track with completing course work for this year. It is important to keep the lines of communication open to ensure that this is indeed happening for your child. Please contact your child’s teachers by telephone at 268-2423 or by e-mail using their first initial and last name at sunrisesd.ca.

Let’s work hard to finish the school year off successfully.
