News from the office…

As we make our way through a very stressful month of May, the school wanted to take this opportunity to give our community a few pieces of information around our four bomb threats.  First and foremost, all decisions regarding the way we go about our day to day business are made with student and staff safety as the focus. Having our school closed until 8:45 each morning, during each lunch hour, and then again at 3:45 each afternoon is not a great deal of fun for anyone, but is necessary to keep the building safe. By doing this, we can be more certain about any future threats being untrue and can also clear the building in a much more efficient way.

We have had security guards outside of the two sets of bathrooms that remain open. They have diligently checked bathrooms and the school for any sign of threats. This is in place to help us pinpoint any suspected writers of a threat before needing to evacuate. Cameras are in the process of being installed both inside and outside the school to do the same job as the security guards once they have left. Students are required to sign in and out of classrooms at all times and are not to be in the halls during a spare if they have one.

Our hope is to be able to return to “normal” as soon as possible but cannot do this until we feel that we have adequately addressed these safety concerns. As we work towards school as usual, we encourage you to talk to your child about the importance of coming forward if they have any information about a possible or actual threat in our school.   Last, but certain not the least important, thanks to all the parents and students for their help, patience and support during this very trying time.

2010-2011 Opening Day…

We are looking forward to another exciting school year for 2010-11. We are pleased to continue with the Opening Day Conferences concept for all grades 6 to 8 students. On the first two days of school, we will be conducting “School Opening Conferences” with all our grades 6 to 8 students and their parents together. It is expected that everyone attend. There will be "NO REGULAR CLASSES" for Middle Years students on September 8th and September 9thRegular classes for these students will begin on Friday, September 10, 2010.

Specialists will also be available to meet with you at this time. We hope to also have representation from our PAC, and other groups who are involved with our school. This will also be a great opportunity to get your Child Abuse Registry Check done if you are planning to volunteer at all in our school. The "Goals" of the School Opening Conferences are: to allow parents, students and teachers the opportunity to get to know one another before the regular school day begins;to promote open and immediate communication between home and school; to increase the comfort level for each student moving to a new grade and/or with a new teacher and;to discuss classroom procedures, routines & philosophies; andto set goals for the school year. In order to attain these goals, please come in prepared to talk about your child.

The school will also be continuing another procedure to start the year. For Senior Years students, the first day of school will be on Wednesday, September 8th for GRADE 9 STUDENTS ONLY. Any new students to grades 9, 10, 11 or 12 will be invited to the homeroom period on that day. The first day of regular classes for Senior Years students will be Thursday, September 9th. The first day of regular classes for Middle Years students will be Friday, September 10th.

If you have any questions regarding the School Opening Conferences, the Senior Years staggered entry or any other questions regarding your child’s first days at École Edward Schreyer School, please do not hesitate to contact us at 268-2423.

News from the office…

The school is hard at work completing plans for next year. These plans include class placements, timetables, school goals and student transitioning. The deadline for classroom placement requests by parents has now passed. We appreciate the time and effort put into those requests received and will consider the best needs of all students when making decisions in the next two months. Classroom placements for Middle Years students will be included in the June report card. Timetables for Senior Years students will also be included in the June report card. The school will make every effort to make timetables available to students as early as possible so that any course changes can occur before the end of the year. If this should not happen, students and parents are reminded that course changes must take place in the first six days of the school cycle when we return in September.

The school also wants to remind folks that teachers and parents need to work together during these last two months of school to help the students keep on track with completing course work for this year. It is important to keep the lines of communication open to ensure that this is indeed happening for your child. Please contact your child’s teachers by telephone at 268-2423 or by e-mail using their first initial and last name at sunrisesd.ca. Let’s work hard to finish the school year off successfully.

Attention !!

French Immersion Parents…

Attention all French Immersion parents!

In the recent months there have been issues regarding the upper grades of French Immersion brought to the table at our PAC meetings.  We felt it was necessary to attack these issues head on to resolve them as efficiently as possible.  To accomplish this, meetings have been held between concerned French Immersion parents and the school administration.  We feel we are making positive advancements with our concerns. Administration and staff have been very active in addressing these issues to bring them to a positive and proactive resolve.

We as a group feel this has to date, been a fantastic open forum and would like to offer all parents of French Immersion children to join us with your concerns or just for your support in improving the quality of this program.

Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, May 4th

in Room 28 at ÉESS, where we will review the student survey results and work on finalizing a survey instrument for parents and staff.

For more information please contact

Patty Sanclemente @ 268-1436.

Let's work together for the betterment of

OUR kids education.

Bienvenue à Mr. Corey Gibb!

Artspeak 2010-11…

Artspeak is an arts credit program offered by the division. It is designed to provide specialized learning for students who are talented in the arts. The program participants explore ideas through writing, storytelling, drawing, painting, sculpture, movement, and music.

Students attend Camp Cedarwood for four days & participate in daily sessions from

9:00 am till 10:00 pm from Monday to Thursday. Successfully completing two of these sessions provides students with a full credit towards their high school diploma.

The 2010 - 2011 program has five possible sessions for students to attend:

"Cirque de Masques"          November 15-18 "The I in Friends"                                December 6–9

"Rhythm of Life"                   February 21- 24

 "Extrapolation"                    March 21-24

"Sign of the Times"             March 28-31

Each session focuses on visual arts, theatre, or music and movement, but each also incorporates elements of all of these. Participants need to be responsible enough to be able to miss four consecutive days of classes; mature & motivated enough to be able to handle four twelve-hour days of intense arts instruction.

Students apply to be accepted to the program by May 20, 2010 and then, before June 15, are informed if they have been accepted or are on the waiting list for sessions.

Not everyone who applies is accepted.

Let Mr. Liske know if you are interested or know of a student who should be

considered for this program!

News from the office…

Welcome back to all staff and students after our recent Spring Break holiday. We are entering the last stretch of school for the year and we hope that everyone is coming back recharged and full of energy after a restful break. The office staff is already hard at work creating next year’s timetable. A thank you goes out to all the students and parents who got those course selection forms in on time.  Middle Years students will also receive their homeroom placement for the upcoming school year in the final report card on June 30th. Any parents wishing to request a particular homeroom must do so by April 30th and must follow the guidelines as detailed in this newsletter.

I also want to highlight one important opportunity for all members of our school community during this month of April. Students all received a letter about a project called Photovoice. ÉESS, BEYS and Gillis are partnering and will be gathering photos depicting examples of Student Learning in our schools and in our communities. The basic idea is that anyone can submit a photo of your interpretation of what Student Learning means. As long as your photo has your name and a one line caption, it will be included and used to help inform the staffs at these three schools when they are setting their goals for the next school year. All photos must be submitted to any of the schools by Friday, April 23rd to be included in this project. Hope to see yours there!! Contact any of the three schools for further details on this exciting initiative.

Lastly, report cards come home with all our Grade 9 to 12 students on Thursday, April 15th. We remind you parents to check through those backpacks, the trunk of your child’s car or the pocket on their jeans for that important check-in on their marks. If all else fails, you can always contact the school for another copy, just in case the original doesn’t find its way home for any reason.

tes bons efforts Christian!

Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, April 6th in Room 28 at ÉESS, where we work on finalizing a survey instrument for parents, students and staff to complete.

For more information please contact

Patty Sanclemente @ 268-1436.

Let's work together for the betterment of

OUR kids education.

RACHEL’S CHALLENGE PARTICIPANTS ARE WELCOME TO JOIN THE FRIENDS OF RACHEL GROUP WHO MEETS TUESDAYS IN THE HUT. This Tuesday will find us choosing our first project promoting kindness & compassion.

An important reminder to all Middle Years parents that they must call the school when their child is absent from school.

Calls must be received before 9:00 a.m.

The school does have an answering machine, so messages can be left by calling 268-2423 anytime.

Please leave a message indicating your child’s full name, homeroom teacher and reason for the absence if possible.

THANKS FOR YOU HELP WITH THIS!!

Photovoice Project…

This year, our school, BEYS and Gillis are partnering together to set our school goals for the 2010-11 school year. On Monday, March 8th, each student at ÉESS will receive a letter outlining this creative way of gathering student, staff and community input around the topic of Student Learning.

Forum For Young Canadians…

Congratulations goes out to Trevor Ans

for being selected as a participant in this year’s Forum for Young Canadians.

Trevor will be representing École Edward Schreyer School, as well as the Sunrise School Division from April 18th to 24th at this conference being held in Ottawa, Ontario.

The forum looks at the foundation for the study of processes of government in Canada. Trevor will be joining other young Canadians to learn about the inner workings of our government at our nation’s capital. The school is proud that you were chosen for this all expense paid opportunity.

Way To Go Trevor!!

Edward Schreyer School Varsity Cheerleaders Place 1st at

Ross Sheppard Cheerleading Competition in Edmonton, Alberta!

The Edward Schreyer School Varsity Cheer and Pom Squads traveled to Edmonton, Alberta to compete in the oldest cheerleading competition in Western Canada. The two day competition combined scores from a performance on Friday night and Saturday afternoon to allow the cheer team to win first place in their Super Large Varsity Category. Although the Pom Team did not place in the top five squads they did win the Grand Prize Draw which entitles them to $2000.00 worth of gear from Ultimate Leaders Corp. – one of the main sponsors of the competition. Both teams worked extremely hard and had the opportunity to practice with two Edmonton teams – St. Francis Xavier and Queen Elizabeth which allowed them a chance to share new techniques and ideas as well as giving them both a cheering section at the competition. After competing on Saturday, the teams made a side trip to Jasper and Banff to allow some time in the mountains – a new experience for many of the squad members! Both teams will be competing in Provincials on April, 9th at the Investor’s Group Centre at the University of Manitoba!

Senior Years Report Cards go home with students on Thursday, April 15th

Please contact the school if your child has not brought home his or her report card.

Senior Years Parent Teacher Conferences take place Thursday, April 22 from

6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

 Gym Memberships & Pedometers…

Thanks to a CDPI Grant, our school is able to offer gym memberships to Back In Action, Curves, and Eastman Boxing for only 40% of the actual cost. The grant covers the remaining costs after the initial amount is paid by the student. We are also able to sell pedometers for 50% of the actual cost. Students can purchase an orange or black pedometer for only $7.00. Bring payment to the office and receive your pedometer.

See Ms. Tymko or PE staff for more info!!

Middle Years Homeroom

Placement For 2010-11…

At the end of April, the school will be initiating grade level meetings to determine class lists for next year. Placing students into classrooms is an involved process with input from administration, classroom teachers, resource teachers, guidance counsellors, special needs teachers as well as other educational specialists. There are many factors taken into consideration when placing students in their class grouping:

  • the learning style of individual students
  • specific learning needs of individual students
  • the group dynamics of students
  • the ratio of boys and girls
  • the total size of the class
  • behavioural needs
  • educational interventions available

Parents wishing to provide sound educational rationale for their child’s placement may submit requests in writing to Mr. Liske,

Ms. Fetterly or Ms. Tymko by April 30th, 2010. These submissions, with rationale, will be considered during grade level placement planning. Submissions following this date will be unable to be considered during the placement process. Placement submissions which only request a particular teacher or placement requests based on student friendships will not be considered.

The school reserves the right to make the final decision based on the overall educational needs of all students at a particular grade level. All placements are subject to staffing changes and changes in teaching personnel could occur after student placement.

Class placements will be included in the final report card sent home with students on Tuesday, June 29th.

March 2010

News from the office…

This newsletter begins by once again thanking all the students, staff and parents for their responsible and respectful behaviour throughout last week’s evacuation. I would not choose this situation, but I was very proud of everyone who stepped up to help us get through safely and smoothly. As a reminder to parents, our emergency evacuation site is the SunGro Centre. If we are ever required to leave the building, students will remain at the SunGro Centre until dismissal, at which time, the buses will pick students up from that location. Students are allowed to call parents on their cell phones, and parents are allowed to pick up their own child at any point throughout the day. Students will not be allowed to go with anyone but their own parents and must be signed out so that we can keep track of all students during the course of the day. Thanks again to parents for their patience last Thursday as we called students to the front of the SunGro Centre to meet you and sign out.

The school is fortunate again to have a special presentation to all students of ÉESS this month on March 11th. An organization called Rachel’s Challenge will be here to host two assemblies, a training session and an evening session for the entire community. Thanks to the sponsorship of Network 4 Change, the entire student population will hear about a young lady named Rachel Scott and how her philosophy, words and actions changed the lives of millions of people. Rachel was the first victim in the shootings that took place at Columbine High School, but the way she lived her life will live on through the many others who have heard her story. Parents, grandparents, community members and students, mark your calendars for a very powerful presentation on March 11th.

Lastly, I want to highlight two important things coming home on March 8th. All students will receive their course selection forms and must have them returned no later than Thursday, March 18th. Students will also receive a letter about a project called Photovoice. ÉESS, BEYS and Gillis are partnering and will be gathering photos depicting examples of Student Learning in our schools and in our communities. Contact any of the three schools for further details on this exciting initiative.

February 2010

News from the office…

We now have January behind us and are looking forward to the half way mark of the 2009-10 school year. Senior Years students are writing exams this first week of February and then will start second semester on Monday, February 8th. New copies of student timetables will be handed out during a homeroom period on the first day back. Course changes will only happen if students bring in a note from a parent indicating the change that needs to occur. Grade 12 students must make changes with Mr. Ewasko, Grade 11 students must make changes with Ms. Tymko, and Grade 9 & 10 students must make any changes with Ms. Fetterly. All course changes must be complete by Friday, February 12th.

February may still bring some cold temperatures so please remember to check the division website at www.sunrisesd.ca for any school closures before sending your child off to catch the bus or to walk to school. Announcements will be made on CJOB and the school telephone line will also have a message indicating a school closure if the weather is too severe for school to be open. If a school closure should occur during exam week, the exam schedule will shift forward and not skip any days. The school answering machine will also list the exams being written on the next day in the event of a school closure during the exam week.

Lastly, I want to highlight proudly the efforts of all students, staff and community members with their fundraising campaigns for helping Haiti in the aftermath of a detrimental earthquake. Seeing the organizational skills and the heartfelt participation makes me even happier to come to work at this school every day. It is truly awesome to witness the young adults and the staff stepping up and working together to help those in need. I am wholeheartedly proud of each one of you.

Also, during the month we will have DEAR in which the whole school will drop everything and read. All staff and students will have a chance to win, if they are caught reading, answering the one minute mysteries, as well as participating in the read to win contest with their class.

Literacy skills are important, therefore the Literacy committee challenges everyone to find a good book and read!

Free The Children’s We Generation…

A big thank you to SANDY POWERS of INVESTOR’S GROUP who nominated Edward Schreyer School to receive a fully sponsored speaking engagement with Free The Children’s We Generation speaking tour! On December 8th Keith Macpherson & Renee Lamoureux put on an exciting workshop at École Edward Schreyer School!    Keith, a former Canadian Idol contestant, along with Renee spread their message of compassion and caring through speaking and playing music. Free The Children and Investors Group are excited to launch this exciting initiative, which has a track record of success inspiring young people across Canada to work towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals.  Thanks to the ongoing support of Investors Group, thousands of youth nationwide will be motivated and empowered to become agents of change within their community and around the world. Founded in 1995 by international child rights activist Craig Kielburger, Free The Children is the world's largest network of children helping children through education, with more than one million youth involved in our innovative education and development programs in 45 countries. Keith and Renee had been touring since 2001, when they released their debut album. They have visited countless cities across North America and have played in international showcases in London and Paris. Their music had been played on television commercials, television shows, and their song Good Year off the Revolution album was chosen as Manitoba’s Homecoming 2010 official anthem song alongside Bachman Turner Overdrive’s ‘You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet’. They have appeared on local TV stations, as well as Canada AM. Their speeches, like their songs, convey a positive message without preaching. They are wonderful role models, and as Keith puts it “When one person decides to live their life in a positive way, it affects the people around them and becomes contagious.”

Thank you to Oliver Lavictoire

Christian Strecker, Sydney Compton, Carleen Stefaniuk, and Hope Dancho who represented ÉESS at a Middle Years Leadership Conference in Gimli last week.

Keep your eyes and ears open for the group’s first few projects coming soon.

Course Selections for 2010-11…

It is that time again, when the school administration needs to start planning and timetabling for courses for next year.

Informational booklets will be handed out to students starting on February 16th

Each student will also participate in a presentation by grade or by homeroom before Friday, March 5th. Parents may attend an info night on Thursday, February 25th at 7:00 p.m. which will deal mainly with the transition from Grade 8 to the Senior Years credit and semester system.

The people to contact if you have any questions are listed in the front of the course selection booklet. Deadlines for returning forms are solid as we will offer courses based on student choices. Any issues with regards to space in a particular course will be solved in part by the date that the student’s form is returned.

Registration packages will be given out on Monday, March 8th. The final deadline for returning course selection forms is Thursday, March 18th. Please take the time to go over these important decisions with your child.

All Middle Years students will be

attending a Pre-Olympic Hockey Game

on Thursday, February 11th

at the MTS Centre in Winnipeg.

Hearts For Haiti…

As outlined in the News From The Office section, the students, staff, and community have truly stepped up and responded to the need for funds to help the earthquake shaken country of Haiti.

Some highlights of our efforts include:

·          Lauren Litke obtaining 172

I ? Haiti T-shirts which were sold for $20 per T-shirt. She also created a video for all students showing facts and photos from Haiti.

·          Brett Hanson, Ryan Wilgosh and

Kody Kennedy organizing a school-wide Hike For Haiti. Students and community members were invited to a free Pancake Breakfast following the event.

·          Mrs. Paseska’s class organizing a pledge drive to raise money through World Vision. Monies raised will be doubled by this organization.

·          Paper Hearts were sold by various students throughout the week for a cost of $2 per heart. The hearts were signed and displayed in the front hall.

·          Heart cookies were sold throughout the week for $2 per cookie. Various students with the help of Mrs. Blocker baked and decorated the cookies.

The initial tallies of the funds raised for Haiti are around the $6200 mark, with monies from the businesses in the community to be collected and counted on February 1st.

Look for final amounts and many more thanks in the March newsletter and the local papers.

Rachel’s Challenge – Year 2…

Rachel Scott was the first person killed in the Columbine High School tragedy on April 20, 1999. She left behind an amazing legacy and a simple challenge to anyone who will accept it – treat others with kindness and compassion and you may just change the world you live in.

Come join us on March 11, 2010 as we enjoy another presentation of Rachel’s Challenge at the Brokenhead River Recreational Complex. There will be two presentations during the school day and an evening presentation at 7:00 p.m. for anyone interested in attending.

News from the office?

Welcome back to ?ESS for 2010!! We trust that everybody had a well-deserved break from the hard work at school and took some time to relax and recharge over the holiday. This also means that we are all coming back with some renewed energy and are ready to tackle the end of semester one and to face the first set of exams for the year. Middle Years students do not write exams. Grades 9 to 12 students must write all exams scheduled in the first semester. Grade 12 students need to be ready for the Provincial exams that fall outside of the school?s exam week. There are no exemptions from exams; however, some courses do not have a final exam being written. Please check the schedule in this newsletter carefully for the dates and times of each exam being written. Students and parents are reminded to check with their teacher for any outstanding assignments before the end of the first term. The last day of classes for Senior Years students is Friday, January 29th.

January may also bring some cold temperatures so please remember to check the division website at www.sunrisesd.ca for any school closures before sending your child off to catch the bus or to walk to school.

 Holiday Hampers?

A huge thank you goes out to all the staff, students and parents for continued generosity with their efforts gathering non-perishable food items and gifts for the school?s Christmas Hampers. This year the school helped to supply six hampers for families in our community. The school and community were also very generous supporting Koats for Kids, a North End Women?s Shelter as well as the locked out Tembec workers in Pine Falls. Our sincere hope is that all these efforts brought joy to the people who both gave and received this past holiday season.

Chamber of Commerce

Student Rep Opportunity?

In association with the Beausejour Chamber of Commerce, a proposal was introduced to have two students in grades 11 or 12 become members at large of the organization.

The selected students would represent youth of tomorrow in observations, discussions and input for the betterment of our community from the perspective of youth.

Students would be required to attend regular scheduled Chamber of Commerce meetings.

Meetings scheduled during the school day would not be counted as an absence from regular class time. Students would need to be prepared to give input on attractions to our area, governmental issues of our community, wants and needs of youth, as well as current and future planning for our community.

The successful candidates will become active members with the Chamber of Commerce in September 2010 through to June 2011.

Grade 11 students chosen could continue in this role for the grade 12 school year as well. Students could earn a Volunteer Credit for being a member at large, in meeting the objectives, and for the time involved in this initiative.

Any interested students should see

Mr. Bauschke before the end of January to

put their name forward for this opportunity.

An important reminder to all Middle Years students that they will be going outdoors for recesses and lunch throughout the winter except in cases of extreme temperature.

Please bring appropriate winter clothing to avoid being ?too cool?.

December 2009

News from the office?

With December arriving, we will be seeing a flurry of activity at the school, and we hope that it?s not in the form of too much snow. The student councils are actively planning some holiday activities, the community has it?s hamper program well under way, and the classrooms are filled with teachers and students getting projects, papers, and presentations wrapped up before the holidays begin. Two important reminders come to mind as we wrap up the first part of the school year. The first is to be thoughtful and considerate towards people with food allergies if we are bringing edible treats to school. The second is to remember that a kind word, or a caring gesture can very often be as valuable, if not more valuable than, an expensive gift.

Let?s spend the next three weeks putting our respectful actions into practice.

December has also arrived with above normal temperatures, for which we are thankful. However, we need to be prepared for the possibility of colder temperatures and/or hazardous winter road conditions. Please check the division website at www.sunrisesd.ca for any school closures before sending your child off to catch the bus or walk to school. Parents always have the right to keep their child at home if they feel that the weather or road conditions may be too dangerous for travel. Announcements regarding school closure will be made on CJOB and the school telephone line will also have a message indicating a school closure if the weather is too severe for school to be open. Check in any of these places for correct information.
Lastly, a heartfelt thank you to all staff, students, parents, and community members who have made this year a very great one thus far. We truly appreciate all the efforts by everyone to make ESS a wonderful place to be. Enjoy your holidays with those near and dear to you.
