WE Day Press Release

Over 450 students and staff from Sunrise School Division will be transported to the MTS Centre on November 23 to join an audience of 16,000 students from across the province in Manitoba's first ever WE Day.

WE Day is a motivational component of WE Schools in Action - a citizenship/social justice/sustainable development program which schools ( grade 6 - 12 ) sign up to and become involved in as part of the Free the Children network. Eleven ( 11 )  of Sunrise's twelve ( 12 ) eligible schools have become WE Schools and have committed to become engaged in one local and one global altruistic action yearly. Sunrise Schools currently participate in many initiatives involving citizenship, social justice and sustainable development. WE Schools provides an international network of like minded schools focused on making the world more just, more equitable, and more sustainable. Some of the typical areas approached by WE Schools include addressing the challenges of hunger, famine, thirst, exploitation, and disease around the world.

Sunrise's attendance at the November 23rd WE Day will provide additional motivation for the endeavours of Sunrise students as they hear speakers such as former US Vice President Al Gore, former Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin, the rock band Hedley and pop singer Shawn Desman.

WE Day will also be available by webcasting for those not attending the WE Day events at the MTS Centre. More information on WE Day can be found at www.weday.com/event/winnipeg or by contacting your local school administration.

Sunrise has a Divisional Social Justice Committee which meets regularly and is committed towards working as a team on many altruistic initiatives including WE Schools. The Sunrise Social Justice Committee is currently arranging school specific involvement in the Five Days of Freedom in April.
